Four: Sergeant A. J. H. Crick, Essex Regiment, who was twice Mentioned in Despatches and awarded an ‘Immediate’ M.S.M.

Alfred James Harold Crick was born in North Benfleet, Billericay, Essex, in 1891, and attested for the Essex Regiment at Wickford on 2 September 1914. He served with the 9th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 30 May 1915, was twice Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazettes 25 May 1917 and 28 December 1918), and was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal (London Gazette 3 June 1919). He was discharged to Class ‘Z’ Reserve on 10 March 1919, and died on 9 January 1963.

His younger brother, Private Frank Farrow Crick, also served with the 9th Battalion, Essex Regiment, and was awarded the Military Medal (
London Gazette 16 July 1918).

Sold with the recipient’s’ riband bar and Essex Regiment cap badge; two Mentioned in Despatches Certificates, these both framed; Twelfth Division Gallantry Card, signed by Major-General A. B. Scott (undated); Certificate of transfer to reserve; Protection certificate; a postcard to the recipient’s sister, with group photograph, signed by “both” (i.e. the two Crick brothers); and a framed portrait photograph of the recipient.
