William Tudor Cooke was born in Bath, Somerset, in 1869 and attested there for the 16th Lancers on 16 July 1887. Joining the Regiment at Dublin on 28 July of that year, he transferred to the 2nd Battalion, King’s Own Scottish Borderers on 1 November 1887. Appointed Lance-Corporal on 19 June 1888, he served with the Regiment in Egypt and the Sudan from that date until 1 January 189. Promoted Corporal on 6 June 1890, he transferred to the Army Reserve on 30 March 1895, and was discharged on 15 July 1899, after 12 years’ service.
