William Carnell was born in Ottery St Mary, Devon, 27 September 1855, and entered the Navy in January 1873. He joined Agincourt as a Signalman, 1 July 1881, was advanced to Yeoman of Signals in May 1882, and was discharged ‘time expired’ on 30 September 1883.
