79th Cameron Highlanders Officer’s Foreign Service Helmet c. 1878-81, a most rare and fine quality example, of standard shape but covered overall in rich quality white cloth and trimmed all round in fine quality white buckskin, the gilt frontal plate of crowned eight pointed star pattern with laurel and gilt overlays, in the centre on a ground of purple velvet St. Edward’s crown over a thistle spray in silver, at the base of the Garter silver numerals ‘79’, spike and base in gilt metal of tropical pattern, gilt chin chain with buff leather lining, lined peaks in green baize material, buff leather sweat band with white silk lining, stamped with retailer’s details ‘Cater & Co., 56, Pall Mall, London’, the plate is original to the helmet, gilt loss to the spike and base otherwise in exceptionally fine condition £1000-1500
