George Preston was born in Chorley, Lancashire, in August 1862. He attested for the Royal Marines at Liverpool in February 1881. His service included with H.M.S. Euphrates during the Egyptian campaign (entitled to Egypt Medal with ‘Tel-El-Kebir’ clasp and Khedive’s Star), and with H.M.S. Kingfisher, April 1888 - August 1891, from whence he was landed during the Witu 1890 campaign (shared in the prize money for that vessel).
