Charles William Baker was born at Hurstmonceaux, Sussex, and volunteered for active service at the start of the Boer War, serving with the 69th Company (Sussex), 14th Battalion, Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa. He served in France from 17 November 1914 as a shoeing-smith with the Army Veterinary Corps, and with the Observer Corps during the Second World War. Sold with notes by his son and a small photograph of the recipient in later life.
