Peter Austin was born at Colsey, Norfolk, and enlisted into the 2/23rd Foot on 19 November 1813, aged 17, joining from the Bury division of the Militia on 5 May 1814. He transferred to the 1st Battalion on 23 October 1814, upon the disbandment of the 2nd Battalion, and served in the Waterloo Campaign of 1815, remaining in France until the end of 1818. He was discharged on 18 July 1819, having procured two substitutes.
