Richard III, Cross and Pellets coinage, Penny, Waterford, mm. unclear, annulets at neck, rev. quatrefoil in centre, 0.39g/1h (Burns W-17R, same obv. die; S 6411). Very small of flan and slightly chipped, otherwise fine or better, excessively rare £600-800
This is an obverse die-duplicate of the Burns coin which he attributes to Richard III on grounds of style. Burns states ‘the portrait and crown much more closely resemble those on the Dublin issue of Richard III than on the Waterford coins of Edward’. The legible Dublin coin illustrated in the Spink catalogue (S 6410) bears out this assertion
