Richard Geoffrey Turner was born in Bromley, Kent, on 16 November 1965, and enlisted in the Royal Marines on 28 May 1984. Posted to 40 Commando on 5 February 1985, he served as an Assault Engineer with 40 Commando, and was promoted Corporal on 22 October 1988. On 7 January 1992 he joined No. 3 Commando Brigade Air Squadron as a Helicopter Crew Chief, and was promoted Sergeant on 10 February 1994. A keen canoeist, he was part of the Royal Marine team that completed the Zambezi Canoe Marathon. After a spell as a P.T. Instructor at Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, from 6 September 1994 to 7 June 1996, he returned to 40 Commando and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 28 May 1999. From 29 September 2000 to 5 January 2003 he served on exchange with the United States Marine Corps at Quantico, where his job was to conduct all aspects of Physical Training for the United States Marine Corps New Entry Officer, and was advanced to Company Sergeant Major (Warrant Officer Class II) on 21 February 2003. He served in this rank with 40 Commando in Iraq during Operation Telic in the first half of 2003, and on return from Iraq was drafted to the Fleet Protection Group, Royal Marines, before taking his discharge on 1 September 2003.
