Leonard Johnson attested for the Royal Highlanders and was awarded the Certificate of Qualification in Electrical Telegraphy at Lucknow on 2 October 1899. He served with the China Expeditionary Force from 3 November 1900 to 16 May 1903 attached to the Royal Engineers Company, and was discharged on 10 August 1908. He subsequently joined the Police and rose to be Chief Constable of Boston Borough Police Force, Lincolnshire.
