Sir John Eaglesome, K.C.M.G., Minst. C.E., F.R.G.S., F.Z.S., Civil Engineer, was born on 14 March 1868, and attended Thomason Civil Engineering College, gaining a Higher Certificate with Gold Medals in Mathematics and Mechanics. He entered the Public Works Department, India, in 1890; Assistant Engineer for construction of Khojak Tunnel, Afghanistan, 1892, and Godavari Bridge, Madras, 1900 (thanked by Government). Director of Public Works, Northern Nigeria, 1900; in charge of Baro-Kano Railway, 1907; Director of Railways and Public Works, Nigeria, 1912. General Manager of the Aire & Calder Navigation, January, 1919. Chief Works: Khojak Tunnel, Godavari Bridge, Baro-Kano Railway, extension to Bauchi Tin Fields, Lagos Harbour Works bridge over River Niger, railway from Port Harcourt to Nigerian Coalfield. Member of Nigerian Executive Council, 1912; Member of Council of Institute of Transport; Member of Colonial Economic Development Committee; Panel of Experts, Ministry of Transport; Member of Mr. Chamberlain's Committee on Inland Waterways. Assistant Controller, Non-Ferrous Metals Department, Ministry of Munitions (Brevet of Officer of Legion of Honour conferred by President of French Republic); Chairman of Northern Sub-Committee, Canal Control, during the period of its existence, April, 1917, to December, 1919. Created K.C.M.G. 1916 (C.M.G 1905). Sir John Eaglesome died on 3 April 1950.
