Africa General Service 1902-56, 1 clasp, Somaliland 1902-04 (A. Davies, Sto. 2Cl, H.M.S. Perseus.) polished, nearly very fine £160-200

Albert Davies was born in Pembroke on 2 February 1884 and joined the Royal Navy as a Stoker Second Class on 30 December 1902. He served in H.M.S. Perseus in that rate from 21 December 1903 until 8 May 1906, and was promoted Stoker First Class on 1 July 1906 and Leading Stoker on 1 October 1911. Advanced Acting Stoker Petty Officer on 7 September 1915, he served during the Great War in the submarine depot ships H.M.S. Dolphin and H.M.S. Maidstone from 10 September 1915, and was killed on 26 December 1915 when H.M. Submarine E6 was sunk. E6 had left Harwich to carry out an anti- submarine patrol in the North Sea. As she neared the Sunk Light Vessel she was signalled by a patrolling torpedo boat to keep clear. Continuing on her course, and within view of the torpedo boat, she struck a mine and disappeared, with the loss of all hands. Davies is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial.
