Francis Beckford Middleton was born in 1838, and entered the 21st Madras Native Infantry in 1856. He was advanced Captain, in 1868, and was posted to the Madras Staff Corps. Promoted Major in 1876, he served in the Afghan War in 1879-80 with the Chotiali Field Force (Medal), and was promoted Lieutenant-Colonel on 4 May 1882. He next served in the Burma Campaign of 1885-87, where he was Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazette 2 September 1887: ‘Colonel Middleton, commanding 21st Madras Infantry, has commanded his regiment firmly and well, and has done much valuable service since he has been in the Yew district.’); and was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order ‘for services in Burma’ (London Gazette 25 November 1887). He was promoted to his ultimate rank of Colonel on 4 May 1886, before retiring on 13 August 1888. He died in the summer of 1895.
