Miss Helen Dick Bonnar, later Mrs. Johnson-Smith, enrolled into the British Red Cross Society in November 1914, in the Midlothian detachment, and saw service at the Sick Children’s Hospital, the Gullam Red Cross Hospital, and the 2nd Scottish General Hospital in Edinburgh before embarking for France where she served in the 8th Stationary Hospital between 28 Marrch 1917 and 12 March 1919. Awarded two scarlet efficiency stripes on 17 February 1919, she was ‘Mentioned’ in Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig’s Despatch of 16 March 1919.
