South Africa 1877-79, no clasp (Capt. H. B. Moffatt. 1-24th Foot.) marks in obverse field, otherwise good very fine £600-800

The only medal without clasp to an officer in the 1/24th Foot.

Herbert Belasyse Moffat was born on 4 March 1844, at Sunbury, Middlesex, and was appointed Ensign in the 1/24th Foot on 6 July 1864; Lieutenant, 26 February 1867; Captain, 4 May 1878; Major, 25 February 1882; Lieutenant-Colonel, Half Pay, 4 March 1892. He attended Royal Military College, Sandhurst in 1871, and served as H.M.’s Vice-Consul at Sebastopol, February 1877 to November 1878. Posted to 25 Brigade Depot in May 1878, he served in South Africa from December 1878 to October 1879, employed on duties in Natal (Medal). He was appointed Garrison Instructor, Malta, October 1881 to July 1884, and as Garrison Instructor at Bangalore, November 1885. Moffat had been promoted to Major on 25 July 1882, and served in India until September 1887.
