J. Singleton was born in Preston, Lancashire, and attested for the Lancashire Fusiliers in November 1895. Having served with the 2nd Battalion in the Sudan, he advanced to Lance Corporal and served with the 1st Battalion (attached 28th Mounted Infantry) during the Second Boer War. He was killed in action at Klip River, 12 February 1902.
