Michael Carroll was born in Roscommon, and enlisted for the H.E.I.C. service at Dublin on 12 January 1847, aged 19 years. Posted to the 1st Bombay European Fusiliers, he quickly saw active service during the campaign in the Punjab, being present at the battles of Mooltan and Goojerat (Medal with two clasps). During the Indian Mutiny he was engaged in the suppression of the outbreak of the 10th Light Cavalry at Ferozepore on 19 August 1857 (Medal). In May 1861 he volunteered for General Service and was transferred to the 103rd Foot, on the disbandment of the Bombay Fusiliers. He was granted the L.S. & G.C. medal, without gratuity, on 26 December 1866, and was discharged on 18 February 1868, after 22 years 152 days service, his conduct being described as ‘exemplary’.
