Edwin Hodsdon was born in West Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. He attested for the Imperial Yeomanry at Buckingham, in February 1901. He served with the 56th (Buckinghamshire) Company 15th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa, March 1901 - July 1902, and was discharged to join the British South Africa Police at Elandsfontein in July 1902.
