Herbert Vaux was born in Dumington, Yorkshire, on 27 July 1885, and served during the Great War with the 1st Battalion, New Zealand Rifle Brigade, New Zealand Expeditionary Force. He was killed in action on the Western Front on 16 September 1917, and is buried in the Huts Cemetery, Belgium.
