Henry Bubear was born in 1881, at Manor Place, London, in 1881 and attested for the 9th Lancers on 9 February 1900, having previously served with the 3rd Battalion East Surrey Regiment. Posted to the 5th Lancers, he served with them during the Boer War from 30 November 1900, returning to the 9th Lancers on 9 February 1902. He qualified as a Nursing Orderly in 1904 and having served in India and South Africa for a second time, he transferred to the Army Reserve on 9 February 1908 and was discharged in 1912. Recalled to the Colours on the outbreak of the Great War on 4 August 1914, he served on the Western Front from 15 September 1914. On 4 January 1916, he is recorded as suffering from shock and admitted to 5th London Field Ambulance and returned to England on 17 January 1916. He was discharged due to wounds on 30 May 1916 (awarded Silver War Badge).
