Alfred Bowles was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, in 1881. He attested for the Northumberland Fusiliers at the city of his birth, in February 1901. Bowles served with the 2nd Battalion during the Second Boer War, and was discharged 8 July 1902. He served during the Great War, initially as an Engine Room Artificer, with the Royal Naval Reserve, and advanced to Engineering Sub Lieutenant (awarded R.N.R. L.S. & G.C. 27 September 1920).
