Provenance: Bt May 2007.
The Surrey Theatre began as the Royal Circus and Equestrian Philharmonic Academy in 1782. It was reconstructed as a theatre in 1799, and rebuilt as the Surrey Theatre in 1806. In 1816 it was retitled as the Royal Circus Surrey Theatre, but was destroyed by fire in January 1865; the rebuilt edifice opened as the New Surrey Theatre on Boxing Day that year but finally closed as a place of entertainment in 1924
