Defective Medals (2): Military General Service 1793-1814, disc only (Matthew Kidd, 74th Foot.) correctly impressed naming; Military General Service 1793-1814, with suspension, no clasp (R. Smart Corpl. 85th Foot.) contemporarily re-engraved naming, the first with brooch marks to reverse, the second with soldered (fixed) suspension, both with edge bruising and contact marks, good fine (2) £200-300
Matthew Kidd was born at Desart, Fifeshire, and enlisted into the 74th Foot on 31 December 1807, aged 20 years. He was discharged at Marlow on 31 January 1812, in consequence of ‘a Gun Shot Wound of Hand at Villa de Fontos 5 May 1811.’ Sold with copied discharge papers and Chelsea Hospital registers.
Robert Smart was born at Abingdon, Berkshire, and enlisted into the 85th Foot in April 1812, at the age of 24 years. He was discharged at Chatham on 29 December 1815, in consequence of ‘a Gun Shot Wound of the left Arm received at Washington on the 24 August 1814, when engaged by the enemy.’ The musters also show that he was a prisoner of war from 26 August to 7 October, 1814.
