Derek Anthony Newman was born on 16 December 1926 and was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers on 20 July 1946. Advanced Captain on 27 June 1955, and Major on 12 December 1959, he subsequently served as Deputy Assistant Adjutant Quartermaster General in the War Office until his retirement on 20 August 1970.
