George Maynard Scarfe was born in 1899 and enlisted in the Royal Flying Corps on 12 December 1917. Commissioned Second Lieutenant (Observer Officer) in the Royal Air Force on 23 August 1918, he served during the Great War aboard the aircraft carrier H.M.S. Argus, before relinquishing his commission on 15 September 1919. He subsequently moved to Hong Kong and was employed by the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, and was a member of the H.S.B.C. Rugby 1st XV.

Argus ashtray, ‘G. M. Scarfe’ scratched onto reverse; the recipient’s well-annotated Royal Flying Corps loose-leaf lecture note book; and various photographic images of the recipient.
