James Uchtred Farie entered the Navy as Midshipman on 15 March 1889; Lieutenant, 30 June 1895; Commander, 30 June 1905; Captain, 30 June 1913. Lieutenant of Centurion, China 1900, landed with the Naval Brigade under Sir E. H. Seymour for the advance to Pekin; Captain of the destroyer Champion, was in command of the 13th Flotilla in the Battle of Jutland, 31st May, 1916, and was commended for his services in the action (London Gazette 15 September 1916; C.M.G.; 2nd Class of St Anne of Russia with swords). He served aboard H.M.S. Cochrane during the North Russia campaign in 1919, including operations east of Murmansk.
