Charles William Giles was born in Worcester on 14 January 1900. He entered the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class on 4 February 1918 and was advanced to Stoker 1st Class in December 1919. Given a free discharge on 23 January 1921, on the same day he joined the Chatham Battalion R.F.R. Appointed Skilled Labourer (Foreman of Dispensary Stores) at the Royal Naval Hospital, Haslar (London Gazette 7 July 1922). With copied service paper and gazette extract.
