William Thomas Chaney was born in Berkhampstead. A Carman by occupation, he attested for the Cameron Highlanders at London on 26 January 1892. After serving with the regiment in Malta and Gibraltar he served in Egypt and Sudan, September 1897-March 1900. Gained his Mounted Infantry Certificate in Egypt, 28 January 1898. Served at the battle of Khartoum. Then served in the Boer War, March-September 1900, being invalided home from the 12th Mounted Infantry. Discharged in January 1904. With copied service papers and roll extracts.
