Alexander III became tsar on the assassination of his father in March 1881 and was crowned at the Cathedral of the Assumption in the Kremlin on 27 May 1883. From 1796, only a few pattern and commemorative coins were issued bearing portraits of the monarch, including the 1883 coronation rouble. Portraits returned to the larger silver currency coins in 1886
