Major Nicholls, 4th (Militia) Battalion Cheshire Regiment served in the Boer War, in operations in the Orange River Colony, May-29 November 1900; and operations in Cape Colony, south of the Orange River, 1900. For his services he was mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 10 September 1901). In March 1904 Lieutenant-Colonel Nicholls, 4th Battalion Cheshire Regiment, was granted the honorary rank of Colonel (London Gazette 1 April 1904). Prior to the Great War he was Lieutenant-Colonel and Hon. Colonel on the Unattached List Special Reserve. Attached to the 5th Battalion Royal Fusiliers, he entered France on 15 June 1915. He relinquished his commission on 27 March 1919. With copied research.
