Pair: Gunner James Scallan, Royal Navy, who served in Hecla at the bombardment of Algiers and afterwards took part in Parry’s Arctic expedition of 1819-20 in search of the Northwest Passage
Naval General Service 1793-1840, 1 clasp, Algiers (James Scallan); Arctic 1818-55, unnamed as issued, nearly extremely fine (2) £2000-2600
James Scallan first appears as [acting] Gunner aboard H.M.S. Onyx on 4 December 1813. He removed to Hecla on 17 July 1816, and was present as Acting Gunner, at the bombardment of Algiers the following month. Promoted to Gunner, he remained in Hecla until 5 January 1821, when he joined Fury, another vessel on Arctic service, in which ship he continued until joining Clyde on 21 January 1824. He was discharged from the latter vessel on 8 May 1830. The Arctic Medal rolls confirms his service aboard the Hecla in Edward Parry’s expedition of 1819-20, when, in company with Fury, he attempted to find the Northwest Passage. Sold with copied extracts from Admiralty rolls for both medals and copied record of service.
Property of a deceased collector who acquired the NGS at a Spink auction in June 1989 and subsequently added the Arctic medal. The medal roll ADM 171/9 does not record details of how or when his Arctic medal was issued
