James Chadwick was born in and enlisted at Wigan, Lancashire. Serving in the 11th Battalion Manchester Regiment, he entered the Balkan (Gallipoli) theatre of war on 11 October 1915. Serving in France from January 1916, Private Chadwick earned the M.M. for bravery in the field, possibly at Poelcappelle in October 1917. He was killed in action in France on 21 March 1918 and was buried in the Philosophe British Cemetery, Mazingarbe, Pas de Calais. He was the son of Thomas Chadwick, of 6 Banks Yard, Coppull Lane, Wigan.
