John Gadsby was born in the Parish of Leet, Co. Donegal. He enlisted into the 39th Regiment at Castlebar, Co. Mayo on 6 May 1812, aged 17 years. Gadsby was discharged on 29 August 1826 as a ‘consequence of chronic rheumatism, very delicate frame and constitution broken in the service, is also a sleep walker.’ With copied service papers.
