‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during an attack. Regardless of personal danger, he moved along the top of his trench, under fire of every description, encouraging his men. Afterwards he went out with a serjeant, and located a number of enemy snipers, bringing four of them back unwounded to our lines. He set a very fine example of keenness and fearlessness.’
