Bernard Joseph Greaney, a native of Small Heath, Birmingham, originally went to France with the 8th Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment but subsequently transferred to the 15th Battalion, Royal Irish Rifles, in which latter capacity he won his M.Ms. An accompanying newspaper cutting, announcing the awards, states:
‘He is 25 years of age, joined the Army in September 1914, and has been in France since June of 1915, having four times been wounded.’
Sold with an original letter from the Adjutant of 15th Battalion, Royal Irish Rifles, dated ‘B.E.F., 30.12.18’, informing the recipient’s father of the pending awards of the M.M. and Bar to his ‘very gallant son’; one or two Great War period cuttings and the recipient’s Military Medallists’ league membership card, the last entry for April 1981.
