Sir Henry Taylor (1800-86), dramatist and poet, b. Bishop Middleham, co Durham; worked in the Colonial Office, 1824-72 and was a prime mover behind the scenes in relation to the abolition of slavery; lived at Sheen, Richmond, from 1851, and in retirement in Bournemouth from 1872 until his death
