James Murphy joined the 2nd Battalion Highland Light Infantry in India on 12 November 1890, serving until 1 April 1898. Whilst in India he took part in the Malakand operations in Bajou Mahmund Country, 1897-98, the Buner attack and the capture of Yanga Pass, 1898. He was awarded the India General Service Medal with clasp for Punjab Frontier 1897-98. He was serving in the Army Reserve at the time of the Boer War and was recalled to the Colours. He joined the 1st Battalion H.L.I. who went to South Africa on 11 November 1899. He took part in the action at Modder River but after the action he may well have returned to Britain. He was serving in South Africa during 1901-02 and was discharged on 4 August 1902.
