James Cowan Paterson, the son of David and Agnes Paterson, was a native of Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland, where he was born circa 1866. James was a long serving member of the Volunteer Force and later the Territorial Force through which he rose through the ranks (he was first commissioned Second Lieutenant, 4 March 1896) serving throughout with the same unit, 1st Lanarkshire Volunteer Rifles Corps, which was later restyled as 5th Battalion The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles). By profession James was a Chartered Accountant (he had qualified as C.A. sometime prior to 1891). Captain and Honorary Major James Cowan Paterson T.D., 5th Battalion The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) died at his home, 25 Sutherland Avenue, Maxwell Park, Glasgow, Scotland, on 12 April 1933, at the age of 60 years.
