Joseph Gilbert attested for the 14/11 R.A. on 6 January 1882, aged 22 years. Serving with the 1/1 Southern Division R.A. he sailed for Egypt, via Malta, arriving in February 1884. Served in the Nile Expedition 1884-85 before returning to Malta. The unit was renumbered the 30th Battery Southern Division R.A. in July 1889 and it was ordered from Malta to Hong Kong in February 1890. Gilbert died at Hong Kong of valvular heart disease on 2 July 1890. He was buried in the Hong Kong Cemetery at Happy Valley. With copied research.
