Egypt and Sudan 1882-89, undated reverse, 1 clasp, Suakin 1885 (Lieut. R. G. Coke, 2/Scots Gds.) very fine £350-450

Reginald Grey Coke was born on 10 July 1864, the son of the Hon. Henry and Lady Katherine Coke and a nephew of the Earl of Leicester. Gentleman Cadet Reginald Grey Coke, Royal Military College was appointed a Lieutenant in the Royal Scots, 6 February 1884 (London Gazette 5 February 1884). Awarded the above medal for services at Suakin 1885. Lieutenant Coke resigned his commission, 21 May 1887 (London Gazette 20 May 1887). Appointed to a commission in the Imperial Yeomanry (London Gazette 19 February 1901). Served in South Africa with the 10th Squadron 3rd Battalion Imperial Yeomanry but was invalided in August 1901. Awarded the Queen’s Medal with clasp for ‘South Africa 1901’. Lieutenant Coke of the 3rd Battalion Imperial Yeomanry relinquished his commission and was granted the honorary rank of Lieutenant in the Army (London Gazette 9 September 1902). In 1908 his wife, Mrs Phyllis Susan Coke obtained a divorce on the grounds of bigamy; Lieutenant Coke having married in America, Gallia Hambourg, sister of the pianist, Mark Hambourg. It was determined that Coke had gained a divorce in Nebraska prior to his second marriage. Reginald Coke was declared bankrupt in 1912 (Edinburgh Gazette 12 November 1912).
