Charles Paulet, 1st Duke of Bolton (c. 1630-99), succeeded his father as the 6th Marquess of Winchester in 1675. Prior to that he served as MP for Winchester in 1660, and then for Hampshire from 1661-75. He was the Lord-Lieutenant for Hampshire from 1667-76 and from 1689 until his death. An eccentric character, he is said to have frequently travelled between Hampshire and Bolton Hall, his estate in Yorkshire, with four coaches and 100 horsemen
