George Ratliff was born in Hadleigh, Suffolk. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the Suffolk Regiment on 5 January 1891, aged 18 years. With the regiment he served in Malta, April 1894-January 1899; South Africa, November 1899-September 1902; Malta, November 1907-January 1911; Egypt, January 1911-February 1914 and France, August-November 1914. With his overseas service curtailed by sickness, Serjeant Ratliff took up duties as Mess Serjeant with the 3rd Battalion Suffolk Regiment based at Felixstowe. Transferring to the Labour Corps in June 1917, he retired in November 1918. Awarded the L.S. & G.C. Medal in October 1909; additionally awarded the 1914 Star with clasp trio of medals. He died in a bicycle accident on 22 January 1921, aged 48 years. With copied service papers, m.i.c. and obituary. In the research his name is variously spelt.
