William Nixon was born in Farlam, Brampton, Cumberland. A Locomotive Fitter by occupation and a member of the R.E. Volunteers, he attested for short service with the Imperial Yeomanry at Newcastle-upon-Tyne on 25 January 1901, aged 23 years, 3 months. He served with the 42nd (Hertfordshire) Company, 12th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa, February 1901-August 1902. He was discharged at Aldershot having completed his service on 11 August 1902. His home address was Bank Hill, Milton Street, Carlisle. With copied service papers and roll extracts.
