Herbert Massey was born in 1887 and enlisted into the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry on 24 September 1914. Transferred to the Royal Engineers, he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war as a Sapper on 9 March 1915. When serving in the 174th Tunnelling Company R.E. he earned the Military Medal for bravery in the field. Having been awarded four wound chevrons, he was discharged at Chatham on 14 December 1918.
