William Huntingdon, son of Alderman William Huntingdon, J.P., a Lancaster Timber Merchant, was educated at Lancaster Royal Grammar School. He enlisted at Lancaster in the 1/5th (Territorial Force) Battalion on 2 September 1914 - he was one of 230 men known as the ‘Lancaster Pals’ Company. As part of the battalion he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 14 February 1915. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the 4th Battalion on 21 September 1915 and was attached to the 41st (Home Service) Provisional Battalion which became the 12th Battalion Royal Lancaster Regiment in December 1916. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant on 1 June 1916 and Captain on 31 July 1917. Latterly on attachment to the Labour Corps before joining the 3rd Battalion Royal Lancaster Regiment in November 1918.
