Sir Anthony Musgrave, GCMG (1828-88), born in Antigua, was a much-respected colonial administrator who had served as Governor in St Vincent, Newfoundland, Vancouver and British Columbia, Natal and South Australia before taking up post in Jamaica from 1877-83. He died in office as Governor of Queensland. Jamaica College was founded by Charles Drax in 1789, changing to its present name in 1879. The Institute of Jamaica was regarded as the chief agency designed to help the government in the promotion and preservation of culture on the island
