George Furnell was born in Dinton, Wiltshire. A Labourer by occupation and a member of the 3rd Battalion Wiltshire Regiment, he attested for the Coldstream Guards at Devizes on 19 November 1898. With them he served in Gibraltar, March-November 1899 and South Africa, February 1900-September 1902. He was discharged medically unfit on 17 January 1903. Between the wars he was employed as a Postman. In the Great War, serving in the 1st Battalion Wiltshire Regiment, he was killed in action, France/Flanders, on 25 September 1915.
