Four: Private T. Cornish, Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, who was taken P.O.W. in Malaya in January 1942 and died in captivity in July 1945

Thomas Cornish, who was from Paisley, Renfrewshire, served in No. 8 Platoon, ‘A’ Company, 2nd Battalion, Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, during operations on the North West Frontier 1939-37.

By 1941, the Battalion was engaged in the fighting in Malaya, attempting to halt the Japanese advance, and Cornish was posted missing on 13 January 1942 whilst attached to the H.Q. Company - he was later recorded as a P.O.W. in Singapore. Moved to Kuching Camp in Sarawak, where he was undoubtedly subjected to appalling treatment, he died on 25 July 1945 - just seven weeks before Japanese local forces surrendered Aged 31 years, Cornish was interred in Labuan War Cemetery; sold with full research.
