Charles William Burton was born in Market Rasen, Lincolnshire, and enlisted in the Lincolnshire Regiment in June 1892, aged 18 years. Having then witnessed active service out in the Sudan with the 1st Battalion, including the actions of Khartoum and the Atbara, he was advanced to Corporal in April 1902 and to Sergeant in November 1907, and was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in AO 254 of 1910. Discharged at Portsmouth in June 1913, he added the M.S.M. to his accolades in AO 87 of 1950.
