John Kent was born in Croydon, Surrey. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the Cavalry on 12 September 1876, aged 19 years. Posted to the 19th Hussars, he served in Egypt, August 1882-November 1885. Kent transferred to the Army Reserve in September 1888.
